About the program

Recent graduates

Two decades ago the University of Dayton launched a new electro-optics program in response to the growing need for professionals with advanced degrees in the optics industry. Our program is in the School of Engineering, but it lies at the interface between science and engineering with faculty contributions from both schools. Optics is at the heart of several new technologies in telecommunications, medicine and manufacturing. Our graduates enjoy success in well paying jobs. Our program finds support from industry, the State of Ohio, and federal government organizations to assist us in our mission to educate engineers and scientists for this workforce. We continually strive to improve the courses in response to the needs of our supporters.

Among the twenty-one credits of core course work, you will find that EO students take three optics labs; the more advanced ones do not follow a prescribed recipe, but have the opportunity to be creative. Students come to EO with different backgrounds and we accommodate that diversity in the advanced course work by a large offering of electives.

It is our desire that every student work on a research project to finish a master's degree with a thesis. We have research opportunities from individual faculty projects, from the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) at nearby Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and from the University of Dayton Research Institute.

A significant number of graduate co-op jobs exist through the AFRL with opportunities to conduct research with government scientists and our faculty using state-of-the-art equipment. The graduate co-op program pays students while they attend classes and is designed to complete the M.S. in a two-year time frame. Additional opportunities are available through companies and Ohio state funds, so interested students are invited to inquire by writing or calling me at 937-229-2394.

Electro-optics program alumni are invited to keep in contact and let us know about your recent accomplishments. We are proud of our graduates, who have demonstrated leadership, as well as professional expertise, and welcome the chance to recognize your accomplishments on our Web site.

Sincerely,

Joseph W. Haus
