Master of Science in Civil Engineering
Program requirements
The program of study leading to the Master of Science in Civil Engineering must include a minimum of 30 semester hours of credit consisting of the following:
  1. Fifteen to eightreen semester hours of civil engineering graduate courses, engineering mechanics and/or thesis-related courses selected from one of the following areas of concentration:
    • engineering mechanics
    • environmental engineering
    • geotechnical engineering
    • structural engineering
    • transportation engineering
    • water resources engineering

  2. Six to nine semester hours of electives to be chosen from current course offerings. For a concentration in engineering mechanics, six semester hours of mathematics (MTH 535 and MTH 551) must be selected. 

  3. Six semester hours of research on a civil engineering thesis. Upon the request of the student and with the approval of the faculty advisor and chair of the department, six hours of additional course work plus three hours of a project (CEE 598) may be substituted for the thesis. A final oral examination is required upon completion of the thesis or project.

Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade of B (3.0 of a possible 4.0) with no more than two semester hours of of C (2.0) permitted.

Admission requirements
Applicants must have an undergraduate degree from an accredited program in engineering, physics, chemistry, applied mathematics or other appropriate program of study. Applicants with a different undergraduate degree may be required to complete prerequisites.

Applicants should have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale. In some cases, applicants with a GPA below 3.0 may be admitted on a conditional basis.
